North Eugene High School home economics teacher Miho Hosaka has created a culinary team to offer her students a new flavor for high school.
Students from Hosaka’s home economics class found a passion in culinary arts and now compete with other teams around the state.

Eugene, Ore.-In less than two weeks, the class of 2013 will be putting on their graduation caps and gowns and walking down campus one last time in the graduation ceremony. Before they take that next step into life beyond college, Duck TV talked to several seniors to share their memories of their time at the University of Oregon.
Tuition has always been a concern for both in-state and out-of-state students, and many went different routes with paying for their education.
“I pay out-of-state tuition, so it’s definitely a hefty load, and it’s pretty intimidating seeing how much I pay every year.” Lana Burge, senior, said.
When it came to housing, most students opted to only stay in campus housing for their freshman year, and had a variety of choices on where they wanted to live for the rest of their academic life.
“I lived in the dorms my freshman year and had a blast,” Ari Kogan, senior, said. “I lived in my fraternity house sophomore and junior year, and it was a good time. Now, I feel like I finally earned a nice, quiet house off campus.”
Lastly, even with difficult course loads with many of the student body, some still found time to get involved with activities outside of the classroom.
“Aside from my sorority, I was also really involved in our campus’ University of Oregon ‘Relay for Life’ event, which was really awesome,” Dana Frielander, senior, said. “I’m really into the philanthropic stuff, so that was really fun to do.”
Graduation will take place on June 17th with the main ceremony beginning at 8:45 a.m. with the Duck Walk Parade from Johnson Hall to Matt Knight Arena. Departments will also have individual ceremonies taking place on different parts of campus after the main ceremony. Eugene, Ore. – More than 800 pairs of used athletic shoes have already been collected during this year’s Step in the Right Direction initiative. The initiative benefits Playing for Kicks and Nike Reuse-A-Shoe. Both organizations hope to create social and environmental change through athletics.
Nike Reuse-A-Shoe works to recycle old shoes, while Playing for Kicks acts as a shoe distributer, passing on slightly worn shoes to needy athletes. Donation bins are located throughout UO athletic centers, including the Rec Center. The initiative will continue to run throughout the month of June.

Eugene, Ore- If you find yourself sticking around Eugene in the summer, be sure to get tickets for some the performers heading to the Cuthbert Concert Series. Special acts will include Atmosphere, Matisyahu, and even Tony Bennett.
“As far as getting people to Eugene, it’s not the biggest market, but people know it’s a college town,” said Cami White, the Box Office Manager for the Cuthbert Concerts. “But a lot of times, acts will actually reach out to us.”

Eugene, Ore. – Lane Transit District, (LTD), has officially entered the engineering phase of the West Eugene Expansion Project. In this phase, the design of the project will be refined, and the public can expect to see surveyors and technical crews gathering information. Crew members will also be sent door-to-door check in and answer questions from businesses, property owners, and residents directly effected by the new route.
“When the west Eugene MX opens, you would be able to travel all the way from the far end of west Eugene, all the way up to north Springfield without even having to transfer vehicles,” said Lisa VanWinkle, communications coordinator for the West Eugene EMX Project.
The engineering phase is funded by Oregon state lottery, and should be finished by winter 2014. Construction should begin soon after and the Eugene community can take advantage of the new route as soon as 2017.
The project is expected to cost $95.6 million, and will be jointly funded by federal funds and the Oregon state lottery. Each year EMX ridership continues to rise, and a new record of 11,258 was reached April 19, 2013.
