Three University of Oregon Law students recently traveled across Oregon and California in a special trip titled Oregon Law: On the Road.

The students traveled in an Oregon decorated green Volkswagen van across the two states to talk with future UO law students and connect them with current students and alumni.

Starting on May 13, the students began their adventure in Bend, Oregon and traveled through Southern Oregon. By May 15, they made it to California, and after stopping in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, they hit their last stop on May 19 in Davis.

Eugene, Ore.- A fire broke out at the Hamilton Complex on May 14, prompting students to be evacuated from the building.

The fire began at 11 a.m. and originated from the basement of Dunn Hall. Students stood outside for more than an hour as firefighters contained the blaze. Greasy mop heads were eventually determined as the cause of the fire. The mop heads had traces of cooking oil residue, and had been sitting in a custodial bucket after being taken out of a dryer.

Although University Housing is changing its policies by laundering their cleaning supplies off campus, students should take extra precautions when dealing with situations like this. When evacuating, student should avoid elevators and instead go down stairs or any form of fire escape available to them. When outside, students need to promptly move as afar away from the building as possible.

Eugene, Ore.– The University of Oregon Institute of Neuroscience is using zebrafish to try to find a treatment for autism.

Scientists have mutated a gene in zebrafish that, when seen in humans, causes autism.  Associate professor of Biology Philip Washbourne is spearheading a project this summer using the zebra fish to better understand and treat autism.

Washbourne says the zebrafish give scientists a way to test drugs to see if they can reverse the disorder in zebrafish. He believes that a drug that can work on the fish stands a good chance of working in humans.

Washbourne and his team are still waiting on funding for the project.

Eugene, Ore.– University of Oregon professors and their supporters rallied to negotiate their salaries with UO administration on May 7^th outside the Knight Library.

Recently instructors and professors formed an 1,800 member union, United Academics of the University of Oregon. Nine members of the group have been meeting with university administrators to work out salaries, health insurance, retirement, and other benefits.

The union asked for 7.5 percent across-the-board raises over the next three years, plus funds for merit pay and catch-up pay for individual faculty members earning far below salary averages in their field.

The Register Guard reports that the increased proposal would cost the UO about $26 million.
