The UO geography department has just completed the first atlas ever made for the Yellowstone national park. It took the department 9 years, 30 cartographers, and about 100 park experts to complete. The atlas contains over 800 graphs and maps of the park and surrounding areas. The Yellowstone Park Foundation took an interest in the idea and was able to partly fund the project over the years. The atlas is on sale in the duck store now. In addition, there will be a public showing on May 31st in the Knight library.

If you have any shoes you want to get rid of, there’s a better option than just throwing them away! “Step In The Right Direction” is a new UO program that promotes recycling with a purpose. Program Coordinator Cassidy Williams said, “What we’re doing is recycling athletic shoes of any brand and what we do is we give the shoes that can’t be worn again to Nike to keep, and they recycle them and grind them up into two sports surfaces.” There are bins located at the EMU, the Student Rec. Center, the second floor of Lillis and the Casa Nova Center.
From hot dogs to vegetarian cuisines, the UO food carts have it all! With over a half dozen food carts on campus, business owners don’t see each other as a competition but more as a community. Business owners do see a slight increase in business during the spring months mainly due to more foot traffic coming and going. However, one thing is for certain; their main competitor is not each other, but rather summer as students travel back home. So while in Eugene, be sure to try some delicious meals while supporting your local food carts!
Traffic fatalities are at their lowest since the 1950s. For instance, although fatal car crashes may seem incredibly prevalent in today’s society, they have actually reduced by 25% since 2005. The Eugene Police Department has seen firsthand improvement here in our surrounding areas. Michael Klews, Crash Reconstructionist, said, “Traffic enforcement agents they have a three flag blitz which specifically focuses upon the use of seatbelts, speeding and running red lights.” Time has been dedicated to specifically enforce these three laws.
Next year, 45 incoming freshmen will be living together in a sustainable living hall. As part of the Walton complex, Clark residents will live with other students who are passionate about living a green lifestyle. Working with residence staff, these students will enjoy films, lectures, sustainable meals, and weekend trips linked to environmental studies. These trips will enable them to learn how UO and our surrounding communities are reducing their environmental footprint.
