Rice Tops Oregon 1-0 in Eugene Regional

Behind the right arm of Jordan Stephens, the no. 2 seed Rice Owls beat the tournament no. 1 and national no. 8 seed Oregon Ducks 1-0 Saturday night at PK Park to take control of the Eugene Regional. Stephens struck out a career high 11 batters while allowing just two hits in a complete game shutout.

Oregon plays San Francisco on Sunday at noon in an elimination game. Should the Ducks win, they would have to beat Rice twice to advance to the Super Regionals. George Horton has slotted freshman lefty Cole Irvin to start against USF in tomorrow’s contest.

Ducks Defeat South Dakota State 3-2 in Opening Game of Regionals

The Oregon Ducks only put up two hits in Friday’s win over South Dakota State Friday, but it would prove to be enough.

Jake Reed pitched seven strong innings, only allowing one earned run and Ryon Healy had a clutch 2 run RBI double to propel the Ducks.

The Ducks won in typical fashion by doing all the little things, simply playing ‘Horton Ball’. In the 8th inning the Ducks drew a walk, bunted a man into scoring position and got another on base after he was hit by a pitch.

That would set up the Ducks slugger Ryon Healy to send in the go ahead runs. The Ducks will advance in the winners bracket and play tomorrow, Saturday, 6 p.m. versus Rice.
