UO Students Voice Opinion about CISPA

cispa

Eugene, Ore.– The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act was passed by Congress on April 18th. The act gives the government access to search through e-mails, text messages, and other sites for any potential cyber threat.

The overwhelming opinion of students on the University of Oregon campus was that  CISPA  was an invasion of privacy.

Chis Long is a UO student. He believes that monitoring a persons personal messages and Internet use would be okay under certain circumstances.

“I would say that the time that it would be okay would probably be in times when someone had committed a crime, maybe then you would have permission to.”

According to the Los Angeles Times the Senate does not plan to consider the CISPA bill.

“I think it’s dead for now,” Michelle Richardson, legislative counsel with the ACLU, told U.S. News & World Report. “CISPA is too controversial, it’s too expansive, it’s just not the same sort of program contemplated by the Senate last year. We’re pleased to hear the Senate will probably pick up where it left off last year.”

The Obama Administration has echoed similar sentiments so it appears CISPA is not moving forward during this legislative session.

“Getting the nomination for 25 ducks, I was just like, wow, I don’t see any of this coming so I don’t even know what’s gonna happen next,” Irungu said.

Irungu has done work for the Grammys, shot in Africa, and currently has an exhibit in the Mills International center. The Emerald will reveal all 25 nominees this Thursday, May 2.

U of O Plans to Tear Down Student Cottages

Screen Shot 2013-04-30 at 6.26.52 PM

Eugene, Ore. – University of Oregon is planning to build a new eight million dollar central kitchen just off campus. The kitchen will streamline meal preparation for the university, which prepares on average 10,000 meals a day. However, the area just off campus happens to be the home of several graduate students and their families. These cottages have been a staple of off campus housing for years.

“My first reaction was disappointment because I’ve really appreciated living here and it was economically a help,” Mariko Plescia, a cottage resident said.

Director of UO Housing Michael Griffel says the housing department is sensitive to the fact that this is a residential area. While residents are being displaced, new housing is being made available for them for next fall. Residents will be transitioned into apartments with a $700 monthly rent.  The soon to be demolished cottages cost around $500 a month to rent.

The new campus kitchen will allow dining halls to receive local produce and improve the food quality for dining halls overall. Griffel also says that UO kitchen facilities are are out of date, and the new kitchen will allow for more food to be made from scratch, using cleaner approaches.
