Eugene, Ore.- More than 70 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been placed around the UO campus to treat sudden cardiac arrest. These portable devices are to be used on those who experience a sudden and abnormal change in the rhythm of their heartbeat.
The UO Office of Emergency Management and Continuity says that an AED device should be used if a person experiences symptoms of a cardiac arrest. The symptoms to look for are the collapsing of the body, stopping of normal breathing, becoming unresponsive and lacking a detectable pulse.
The AEDs are designed with simple audio and visual commands because they are meant to be used by any unequipped and uneducated bystander in a time of emergency. The AEDs are now located all across campus with several concentrated in areas of physical activity– The Student Recreation Center, Esslinger Hall and Matthew Knight Arena. For a full list of AED locations, please visit the The UO Office of Emergency Management and Continuity’s device location map. http://emc.uoregon.edu/sites/emc.uoregon.edu/files/uploads/AEDMap.pdf
