Eugene, Ore.– The University of Oregon Police Department is looking to expand its level of service by carrying firearms. They say that an armed police force will be able to provide better services for the campus community. Due to the safety issues that come along with not being armed in emergency situations where response time is important, the officers are limited by what they can do.
The input from the community on an armed police force is important to the UOPD, so hearings will be held in the upcoming months in order for students and faculty to contribute their thoughts on the matter. The next meeting is on February 26th, from 4:30 to 6pm in the EMU Fir Room. All students are encouraged to attend and express their views on the potential new additions to the UOPD.
