Eugene, Ore –
Students throughout campus attempt daily to reconnect to the university’s wi-fi, only to have anew difficulties with the internet just after a few moments of it working. It’s a frustrating and recent problem that UO’s IT department is aware of, but just like the You Tube video you tried to upload on campus, it may take awhile.
Patrick Chinn, the Interim Communications Manager at UO, says that one of the reasons why the university’s wireless internet is having difficulties with sustaining all of the traffic is because the wi-fi technology that the university has is outdated. “The majority of the gear is seven years or older, and so a lot of that equipment needs to be upgraded…”
Within those seven years, the use of laptops and smartphones have gone through the roof, and the introduction of netbooks and tablets have made internet traffic even busier. To be exact, just from October 2010 to October 2012, campus has had a 112% increase in wi-fi compatible devices.
The university is currently fixing the problem. In the meantime, if internet problems persist, you can always purchase an ethernet cable and hardwire yourself into the internet. Most areas at the UO have easily accessible ethernet outlets for you to use at any time.
