Eugene, Or, – February is Dating Violence Awareness Month.
Since 2010, dating abuse has been addressed as part of the Violence Against Women Act, passed in 1994. Teendvmonth.org identifies dating violence as a pattern of abusive behaviors used to exert power and control over a dating partner. One in three young people are victims of dating violence and never report it to an adult that can end the abuse. Dating Violence does not pertain to just women, as many young men have reported dating abuse. Dating violence can range from being physical, verbal, emotional, sexual or even digital. Young people find it difficult to seek help as over 80% of school counselors report not being prepared to handle a situation where a young person is a victim of dating abuse.
The Women’s Center at the University of Oregon is taking steps towards ending dating violence. They will be hosting an event for International Women’s Day on March 12th and Take Back the Night in April. For more information visit the Women’s Center page
