Eugene, Ore-
The start of a new year comes with the start of a new ordinance passed by Eugene City Council. With a unanimous pass, the new ordinance can fine hosts of parties up to one thousand dollars if two or more offenses were to happen. Offenses include, but not limited to, noise complaints, public intoxication, disorderly conduct and underage drinking.
The new ordinance has its critics. Some students suggests that this steps on their personal privacy, and that the fee is unnecessarily high. The ordinance comes after an increase in alcohol-related violations surrounding the UO campus. According to the City Council, alcohol-related violations have increased upwards to fifty-five percent from 2006 to 2010.
Eugene Police are helping landlords better understand the ordinance, so that they’re able to see what new responsibilities they have to enforce. After some resistance, landlords look to be on board with the new ordinance. Their hope is that this ordinance will help questionable tenants be held accountable for their actions.
Eugene Police says that the ordinance has had positive effects in other college towns, and their hope is that the same can happen here also.
