Eugene, Ore. – The Greenhill Humane Society held a ‘Pet First Aid’ workshop last Saturday, January 26th. Certified Veterinary Technician and owner of Cat Nurse on Call, Randi Golub, taught this fun and informative Pet First Aid and CPR course. For 50 dollars, those who attended the clinic were informed how to assist their pets in case of a medical emergency.
All participants were taught how to approach an ill or injured animal, make an initial assessment, check for breathing and pulse, perform rescue breathing, perform CPR, perform the Heimlich maneuver, recognize common pet illnesses, make a pet first aid kit and administer medications. They even had the opportunity to practice their newfound skills on a “live” model: Casper, the clinic’s very own demo dog.
The workshop not only taught participants the basics for looking after pets, they also gave some recommendations to pet owners. They suggested that pet-owners should look for warning signs like loss of appetite, vomiting for long periods of time, or any real changes in the behavior of their pets. Not only did participants leave with a physical pet first aid guide, but they walked away with a feeling of satisfaction knowing they were prepared to aid their pet in a time of need.
