Eugene, Ore. – Sustainable Design for the Built Environment is teaming up with AC Martin to renovate the University of Oregon’s Erb Memorial Union. The EMU is supposed to act as a central hub of campus— but with its confusing set up, outdated spaces and circulation issues, the EMU is not engaging for students. Hence, the goal of the project is to make the EMU more of a functional part of campus.

Although the original plans to move forward with this project were passed last November, the project was waiting for some final court approval. Last week, the ASUO court ruled in favor of the now dismissed ASUO President Laura Hinman, officially allowing the construction plans to move forward.

They plan to renovate the EMU in two parts; this will allow for a less disruptive construction period, as there will always be an accessible area for students despite the inconvenient construction. A few of the new additions to the EMU will include a new 1,200 seat concert hall, new dining and retail areas, an advanced computer lab and an updated student sustainability center. The EMU construction is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2015.
