The pressure of huge tests ensures that proper study techniques are quickly forgotten by many students.  But, there are still ways to achieve your goals. The number one problem for college students, is waiting until the last minute to study. Long term memory works much better when it has time to settle in.

Carly Smith, a UO doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Program, recommends preparing well in advance for your tests.

Smith said, “One thing that does help is if you are going to cram, going to sleep right afterwards that really with consolidation and not doing something right after you study, even though it feels good, watch a movie, go out, that’s gonna mess with your consolidation. So if you have to cram just go right to bed afterwards.”

Along with getting a good night’s sleep, students are encouraged to keep a level head.

“A lot of times we see students putting pretty extreme pressure on themselves of having to get an a on this exam and that actually impacts studying in a way that makes it less efficient. Try to keep in mind what actually the outcome might mean for you. Maybe you’ll get a b, if that’s the worse case scenario, maybe that’s a little bit easier to live with,” Smith continued.

As a reminder, student fees include 10 sessions at the counseling and testing center. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, make an appointment with a counselor at any time.
